Husband's brutality for dowry

A woman, brutally tortured allegedly by her dowry-greedy husband, groans in pain at Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex with her left eye injured badly.

Police arrested the accused husband in this connection.

Victim Suborna, 24, wife of Sejnu, 32, of Pigna village, is mother of a six-year-old son.

Sejnu often tortured Suborna for Tk 1 lakh dowry since their marriage in 2009, said the victim's brother-in-law Moynal Hossain.

The couple locked in an altercation over the issue on Monday afternoon. At this, Sejnu beat Suborna mercilessly and at one stage, he hit her on the left eye and forehead with a brick, leaving her injured severely.

Hearing screams, neighbours rushed to the spot, rescued the victim and sent her to the health complex, said Dr Momtaj Uddin, resident medical officer of the hospital.

“Suborna is now suffering with severe pain, specially, for an injury in her left eye which has swollen abnormally and there is blood in the eye's sclera (white portion of the eye),” he said.

Following a case filed by the victim's family, police arrested Sejnu on Monday night, said Rezaul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sarishabari Police Station.

Yesterday afternoon, police produced the accused before a court that sent him to jail, said Court Inspector Abdul Kader.
