Hill students clash with police, two arrested

Hill students clashed with the law enforcers following a human chain programme in Khagrachhari town yesterday, protesting the government's move to launch an eco-tourism project in two upazilas of the district.

The clash began as the hill students attack a Bangalee student after their human chain programme around 11:00am, protesting the eco-tourism project in 640 acres of land under Sadar and Matiranga upazilas.

Police also arrested two hill students, Bijoy Chakma and Sukesh Chakma, from the spot.

Witnesses said soon after the programme, some demonstrators attacked an activist of Bangalee Students' Council, whom police rescued. Later, the demonstrators reorganised themselves and started pelting brickbats towards the law enforces.

In retaliation, police fired eight rounds of rubber bullets and two teargas-shells to disperse the agitating group, said Rais Uddin, Khagrachhari assistant superintendent of police (ASP).
