Poachers have become active, especially in Satla and Harta Beel areas of the district, during the winter that witnesses arrival of a large number of migratory birds.

A section of local influential people hunt the birds using traditional traps and sell them at a bazar in Harta village under Ujirpur upazila, said locals.

“We failed to prevent bird hunting as the poachers are patronised by a section of ruling party men,” said trader Bimol Chandra of Harta bazar.

During a recent visit to Satla bazar area, this correspondent found some youths selling each migratory bird for Tk 400 to Tk 500.

A large number of these birds were seen at Uttarpar bazar for sale at the market held every Sunday and Wednesday this season, said villagers.

A few youths are engaged in the unscrupulous act, said Harta Union Parishad Chairman Haren Roy.
