Eid holidaymakers, who have been suffering in long tailbacks on the Dhaka-Tangail since this morning, allegedly torched a car of an executive magistrate on the road in Kalihati upazila of Tangail this noon.

The car of magistrate Al Mamum was torched in the Pungli area on the highway around 12:00pm when they were staging demonstration in the area demanding hassle-free journey, our Tangail correspondent reports quoting Ahaduzzaman Miah, additional superintendent of Police in Tangail.

The magistrate went there to monitor the situation of the highway, the correspondent reports.

Besides, the agitating holidaymakers also blocked another side of the highway owing to which Dhaka-bound vehicles coming from country’s northern part were stuck in traffic in Sarutia area in Tangail.

The passengers blocked the road by placing logs and setting fire to waste on the highway around 12:00pm, our local correspondent reports from the spot.

Mosharaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge (east) Police Station), said the vehicles started crossing the bridge slowly from this noon.

Thousands of holidaymakers were suffering in long tailbacks on the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Sirajganj highways since this morning.

On the Dhaka-Tangail highway, a 40-kilometre-long tailback was created as authorities closed the road at the toll plaza of Bangabandhu Bridge (East side) around 6:15am due to excessive pressure of vehicles.

“Vehicles could not cross the Bangabandhu Bridge between 6:30am to 9:15am as there was a huge pressure of vehicles on the other end of the Dhaka-Sirajganj highway,” according to the control room of Bangabandhu Bridge (East side).

The bridge was opened for movement around 9:15am but movement of vehicles on the highway was still very slow, our Tangail correspondent reports quoting Sajedul Islam, traffic inspector of Tangail.

The tailback stretching from Bangabandhu Bridge to Tangail was still persisting till last reported at 10:45am, the correspondent reports from the spot.
