The Supreme Court today stayed the process for holding Tangail-4 by-polls till November 2.

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Syed Mahmud Hossain fixed November 2 as the apex court is scheduled to hear a petition filed by the Election Commission on that day.

The EC on October 26 filed the petition seeking stay on a High Court order that asked the commission to allow Abdul Kader Siddiqui to contest the election.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told The Daily Star that the commission cannot proceed with the process for holding the election till Nov 2 following today’s SC order.

The High Court on October 21, following a writ petition, directed the EC to accept the nomination of Kader Siddiqui and allow him to contest the by-polls scheduled to be held November 10.
