The High Court today wanted to know what steps have been taken to rehabilitate the evicted Santal community of Gobindaganj upazila in Gaibandha.

It also issued a rule asking explanation in two weeks as to why the government should not be directed to rehabilitate the indigenous community who became landless after an eviction drive on November 6 last year.

Gaibandha deputy commissioner and Gobindaganj upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) will have to submit a report in two weeks in this regard before the court.

The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Haque and Justice Mohammad Ullah came up with the rule and order on a suo moto move during hearing an earlier rule issued over the legality of damaging evidence of the eviction.
