Habiganj civil surgeon dies of ‘dengue’

Civil Surgeon of Habiganj Dr Mohammad Shahadat Hossain Hajra has died of fever and the doctors say the symptoms indicate that it could be dengue fever.

Dr Shahadat Hossain, 53, was declared dead at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital at 10:00pm yesterday, Prof Dr Uttam Kumar Barua, the director of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, confirmed to The Daily Star.

Quoting an administrative official of the civil surgeon office, Dr Debapada Ray, director of Health, Sylhet division, said the civil surgeon started to feel very sick when he was attending his usual office work yesterday in Habiganj.

Dr Debapada then instructed the administrative official to immediately take him to the 250-bed Hospital in the district.

The health director also instructed to send the civil surgeon to Dhaka, if his condition further worsened.

The doctors of the 250-bed Hospital in Habiganj said the symptoms indicate it could be dengue.

Around 5:00pm yesterday, Dr Debapada, talked to the civil surgeon again who complained of high fever and severe pain in his body. He was then sent to Dhaka immediately for better treatment.

He reached Dhaka around 10:00pm and went directly to his home, Dr Debapada said quoting the civil surgeon’s son.

However, in an hour Dr Shahadat Hossain’s condition deteriorated severely and he asked his son to take him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
