Graft allegations against mayor

Councillors of Bhuapur municipality yesterday brought different allegations of corruption and irregularities against Mayor of the municipality Masudul Haque Masud.

All eight councillors made the allegations at a press conference in front of Bhuapur upazila election office.

Councillors Anwar Hossain, Nawab Ali, Razzaque Tarafdar, Khandakar Jahid Hassan, Saleha Begum, Rekha Chowdhury and Beauty Begum spoke at the conference with Abdus Sattar, panel mayor of the municipality, in the chair.

The councillors at the programme blamed the mayor for his autocratic activities that made Bhuapur municipality a 'non-functional municipality'.

The mayor was giving works to his own men in exchange of bribe without following the rules and regulations of the tender process, they alleged.

He has been misappropriating money by taking up unnecessary projects instead of taking important projects having public interest, they said.

The councillors also threatened to take 'no confidence' motion against the mayor if his irregularities and corruption are not stopped immediately.

Contacted, Mayor Masud refuted the allegations of corruption and irregularities against him.

As the councillors are not getting unethical facilities, they are trying to tarnish his image, said the mayor.
