To expedite the arrest of Gaibandha lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton’s arrest, the government today sought the Supreme Court’s stay on a High Court order that directed him to surrender before a lower court by October 18.

Liton is implicated in the two cases for shooting a 10-year-old boy and looting and vandalising a house soon after the firing.

After filing the petitions, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters that the SC chamber judge may hold hearing those today.

The AG yesterday said he would move a petition before the Appellate Division for an order so that law enforcers did not hesitate to arrest the lawmaker.

Around 6:00am on October 2, the Gaibandha-1 MP shot Sourav Mia, a class-four student, in both legs for no apparent reason. The incident happened when the 10-year-old boy was taking a morning walk with his uncle at Gopalcharan village in the district, family members said.

The following day, the boy's father filed a case against Liton for attempting to murder his son. The boy is now under treatment in Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The other case was filed against Liton and nine “of his men” on October 8 on charges of vandalising a house and looting its corrugated tin sheet roofs and furniture in a Gaibandha village soon after the shooting.
