Good yield, fair prices make sugarcane farmers happy

Good yield of sugarcane makes farmers in the district happy as the cash crop is selling for good prices during the peak harvesting period.

Earlier the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) arranged training on sugarcane cultivation and provided logistic support to the farmers in the district.

DAE fixed a target of sugarcane cultivation, mostly belonging to Ishwardi-15, Ishwardi-16, Iswardi-17, Ishwardi-18, Iswardi-19, Ishwardi -20, Gandari and Q-varieties, on 125 hectares of land in 12 upazilas under the district and 5,030 tonnes of production is expected if the weather remains favourable.

Farmer Golzar Hossain of Atmul village in Shibganj upazila said he cultivated sugarcane on 0.80 acres of fertile land spending Tk 12,500 and expects Tk 35,500 as profit from it at the current market price.

Agriculture officials and farmers are expecting a bumper yield as heavy rain fall did not damage sugarcane in the district, said Dr SM Abul Hossain, additional director of DAE in Bogra region.
