A good move

Birganj UNO goes door to door at night to help cold-hit poor people

Door to door visit of Birganj upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) on Friday night appeared as a blessing for the distressed and ultra-poor people, who are really bearing the brunt of the ongoing cold spell across the country.

The initiative by UNO Mohammad Alam Hossain received appreciation across the upazila.

He took the different initiative to distribute blankets so the actual sufferers can avail the government allocated warms clothes.

The temperature in different areas of the district has been 3.2 to 8.0 degrees Celsius since last Saturday, according to Dinajpur Meteorological Department.

With the sudden dip in temperature and shortage of warm clothes, many people, mostly children and elderly people living in rural areas of the district, have been experiencing pain of the bone chilling cold this season.

Sources said although District Relief and Rehabilitation Office in Dinajpur received 80,000 blankets, most of those were allegedly misused in absence of proper distribution system.

Around 11:30pm, when most people were asleep, UNO Alam came out of his official residence with 200 blankets and went toward Jaliapara and Kashimnagar villages.

The UNO later distributed the blankets among the much needed people after seeing their suffering with his own eyes and returned to his residence around 1:00am.

“When I was wondering how to get a blanket he [UNO] came to me and gave me one,” 85-year old Obiron Begum of Kasimnagar village said.

UNO Alam told this correspondent over cell phone that he distributed nearly 2,000 blankets in such a way.

“I choose such a way so that the actual sufferers can receive the blankets,” the UNO added.
