A good initiative

Bicycle distributed among meritorious schoolgirls to promote education

Fifteen girl students in Sadar upazila of the district received bicycles on Wednesday for easy communication to and from school.

AF Mojibur Rahman Foundation gave the bicycles free of cost among the poor and meritorious students at a programme on the school premises.

The girls are students of Class VII to Class X of AF Mojibur Rahman High School.

“I learnt cycling three years ago, but I did not tell my father to buy me a cycle as he is a rickshaw-van puller. Now I have got a new cycle and I can go to school and return home easily. I am very happy,”said Sweety Aktari.

“I lost my father at an early age. I learnt how to ride a cycle from my brother one year ago. My house is three kilometres from my school and it was tough for me to go to school and return. Now my problem is solved after getting this new bicycle and I am very happy,” Israt Jahan said.

“I came here to see the bicycle distribution programme. I feel proud to see our girl students ride cycles,” said Rupban Begum, a housewife of Garda area.

“It is an outstanding step for developing women's education in our locality. I want women to come forward to break down all kind of superstitions,” said Rushama Mili, assistant teacher of Garda Government Primary School.

Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Khondker Mohtesham Hossain Babar was the chief guest at the programme.

“Providing bicycles for the poor and meritorious girls attending school from distant places is a good initiative to encourage girls' education in the area,” he said, adding that he will give bicycles to students of 10 schools from the upazila parishad fund.
