Robbers enter jewellery shop exploding home-made bombs, injuring three

A group of armed robbers looted a huge quantity of gold ornaments worth Tk 2.5 crore and Tk 5 lakh in cash from a jewellery shop after injuring three people, including the owner of the shop, in New Market area of Bogra town on Saturday.

Shop owner Golzar Hossain, one of his employees Zakir Hossain, 40, and pedestrian Anwar Hossain, 50, who sustained injuries during the incident, took treatment at different hospital and clinics in the town.

Police quoting witnesses, said a gang of seven to eight armed robbers on a microbus took position near 'Al Hasan Jewellers' around 7:00pm and entered the shop blasting several crude bombs, creating panic among the locals.

They later looted 500 to 550 tolas of gold ornaments worth around Tk 2.5 crore and Tk 5 lakh in cash from the shop and fled the scene, injuring the three, police said.

On information, a police team went to the spot and informed all the police stations under the district over wireless messages to check the vehicles plying on different roads and highways.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gang fled the scene, leaving one of their injured cohorts inside the microbus in an abandoned condition in Noymail area on Dhaka-Bogra highway under Shajahanpur upazila, police said.

Police later arrested Alamgir Hossain, 35, along with some crude bombs and seized 300 tolas of looted gold from the microbus.

Injured Alamgir, is now undergoing treatment at Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital under police custody.

Aslam Ali, inspector (inquiry) of Sadar Police Station, said Golzar Hossain filed a case against six to seven unidentified people the same night.
