Gazipur schoolgirl ‘strangled to death by stalker’

A schoolgirl was allegedly strangled to death by a stalker in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur today.

The victim Munni Akhtar, 14, was an eighth-grade student of Chapair High School and daughter of Shaheed of Kutubdia village in the upazila, our correspondent reports quoting family members.

Munni’s family members alleged that one Arafat Sarker, son of Ataur Sarker of the same village, entered her room early hours of today and strangled her to death with her scarf.    

On information, police recovered the body lying on a bed with a scarf around her neck, said Abdullah Al Tabir, sub-inspector of Kaliakoir Police Station.

Arafat has been harassing Munni on her way to the school regularly with romantic advances, the victim’s brother Ripon told our correspondent.

“As the matter was informed to Arafat’s father, Arafat threatened to kill my sister and father earlier,” Ripon said.

No evidence of rape was found in the victim’s body primarily, the SI further said.

The body was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College for autopsy.
