Nearly 3,000 garments workers of a factory in Savar blocked a road for two and a half hours demanding arrears.

The workers blocked the Hemayetpur-Singair road, used by some commuters to travel between Dhaka and Manikganj, reports our Savar correspondent from the spot.

However, after law enforcers and worker leaders convinced them, the workers left the spot and took position inside the factory, the correspondent added.

Vice President of National Garment Workers Federation Mohammad Kabir Hossain said further decision will be taken after talking to the factory authorities but for now the workers have agreed to clear the roads and take the protest to the compound.

The workers of Raquef Apparels Washing & Packaging Industry today alleged they were supposed to get paid for the month of January within the first week of February, however, the authorities said they would pay the salary by today.

When workers went to the factory this morning, they did not find any authorities nor did they get paid -- prompting them to take to the streets, the correspondent reports quoting protesting workers.

Meanwhile, Deputy General Manager (Production) Abul Kalam told our correspondent he is not handling this matter and it would be best to contact Deputy General Manager (Admin) Shakil Mahmud in this regard.

But the correspondent could not reach the official by the time this report was filed around 12:35pm.

Law enforcers were deployed to the spot to try and urge the workers to remove the blockade and Officer-in-Charge of Savar Model Police Station ASM Sayeed said they have urged the workers to remove the blockade and they complied.
