Gaibandha MP Liton killed in gun attack

Gaibandha-1 Awami League MP Manzurul Islam Liton died this evening after he was reportedly shot by unknown assailants at his village home in Sundarganj upazila of the district.

Three unidentified criminals stormed into Liton’s house in Bamondanga area around 5:45pm and opened fire at him when he was sitting at the guest room, said Atiar Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sundarganj Police Station.

The attackers, who went there by a motorbike, left the spot immediately after the firing, leaving Liton injured in his chest, the OC told our Gaibandha correspondent quoting family members.

Later, he was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition where the doctors declared him dead, Khandker Golam Faruq, deputy inspector general of Rangpur range, told The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of local Awami League and its associate bodies staged demonstrations at Gaibandha sadar and Sundarganj upazilas protesting the incident.

Blocking the railway line at Bamondanga station, they also demanded arrest and punishment of the attackers.

Earlier, MP Liton drew widespread flak after he shot a 10-year-old boy on October 2 last year.
