Situation in Gaibandha Worsens Further

Fresh areas flooded, over 1 lakh marooned

With inundation of fresh areas in Gobindaganj upazila, the flood situation in Gaibandha district worsened further yesterday, reports our correspondent.

The Karotoa River was flowing 34 centimetres above the danger mark in the last 24 hours, local Water Development Board (WDB) sources.

According to district flood control centre, at least 213 villages in six upazilas have been flooded.

The affected upazilas are Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari, Saghata, Gobindaganj and Palashbari.

As many as one lakh 35 thousand 102 people still remained marooned in the upazilas.

Breaches have developed in Balua flood control dyke along the Bangalee River in the morning, inundating different areas of Shibpur, Kocharshaher and Mohimaganj unions in Gobindaganj upazila.

The district administration has distributed 130 tonnes of rice and Tk 2.30 lakh among the flood victims, said Deputy Commissioner Abdus Samad.

In Sirajganj, the floodwater started receding from Wednesday in the district, reports our Pabna correspondent.

Sirajganj WDB executive engineer said the Jamuna was flowing below danger level yesterday.

Md Abul Hossain of Balighugri village in Sadar upazila, said as the floodwater started receding, the waterborne diseases spread out rapidly.

Civil Surgeon Dr Debpada Roy said separate medical teams are working in the flood affected areas for giving treatment to the affected people.

According to our Jamalpur correspondent, flood situation in the district was improving.

However, the Jamuna was flowing 17 cm above the danger mark yesterday, inundating 123 more villages in Bakshiganj, Islampur, Dewanganj, Sarishabari, Melandah and Madarganj upazilas.

The authorities shut at least 119 schools as floodwater entered the institutions, said District Primary Education Officer Abdul Alim.

About 8402 hectares of croplands have been damaged in the upazilas, said Department of Agriculture Extension sources.
