Benapole land port fire under control
Probe bodies formed
A fire that broke out at a shed of Benapole land port in Jessore this morning has been brought under control after six hours of frantic efforts.
The fire originated from an electric short circuit at the shed No. 23 of the port around 4:00am, our Benapole correspondent quoted port’s Director Nitai Chandra Sen.
On information, 13 firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control around 10:00am, said Jessore Fire Service and Civil Defence’s Assistant Director Parimal Kundu.
One of the firefighters suffered minor injuries while dousing the fire and received primary treatment at local upazila health complex, Kundu said.
Goods worth around Tk 50 lakh at the shed No. 23 and several trucks parked in the area were gutted in the fire, said Shafiur Rahman, president of C&F Agents' Association of the port.
Probe bodies formed
Three probe committees have been formed by shipping ministry and Benapole land port and customs authorities to investigate the fire incident.
Shipping ministry has formed a three-member probe committee with its joint secretary as the chief.
Two five-member probe committee each headed by Assistant Director Abdul Hannan of Benapole port authority and Additional Commissioner Firoz Uddin of Benapole customs authorities have also been formed to find the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan along with the secretary of the ministry and the chairman of the Benapole Land Port will visit the spot to assess the damage caused by the fire, our Benapole correspondent reports quoting Jessore Deputy Commissioner Humayun Kabir.
