Fine doubled for cheating in weight

The cabinet today approved a draft law with the provision of two years’ imprisonment or Tk 1 lakh fine for traders cheating in weight.

The proposed Standards of Weights and Measures Act 2017 has doubled the fine for the offenders, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said while briefing journalists.

The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

At present, traders are sentenced to two years' imprisonment and Tk 50,000 fine if they cheat in weight.
