Fifth grader pregnant

Family of a 12-year-old girl, left pregnant due to rape allegedly by her tutor in Nawabganj upazila of the district four months ago, is facing social isolation while the accused remained scot-free.

The victim, daughter of a day labourer at Shalti-Muradpur village in Nawabganj, and a Class V student of a local school, stopped attending her class due to social stigma, said her father who filed a rape case with Nawabganj Police Station accusing Md Rabiul Islam, 22, of the village on January 8.

“On that day in September last year, he [tutor Rabiul] gagged and raped me at his uncle's home. I did not tell my parents about it as he threatened to kill me and torch our house if I disclose the incident. In this way, he raped me two more times,” said the girl in tears.

“In early December last year, the girl suddenly started vomiting. After failed treatment by a rural doctor and then a herbal practitioner, we took her to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur on January 4. There doctors detected her four-month pregnancy,” said the girl's father.

Subrata Sarkar, OC of Nawabganj Police Station, said police are trying hard to arrest the accused.
