Farmer killed over irrigation dispute

Police arrest one, hand over body to family members

A man was killed in an attack by his rivals allegedly over irrigating croplands in Nasirnagar upazila of the district yesterday.

The deceased, Abdul Motalib, 58, was a farmer of Gokarno village in the upazila.

Quoting the victim's family members, police said Motalib went to the water pump house on Wednesday morning and was waiting in the queue for his turn.

In the meantime, one Raju Mia of the village and his men provoked Motalib first and then engaged in an altercation with him over who is going to get his turn first.

At one stage, Raju and his men swooped on Motalib and beat him mercilessly, leaving him critically injured.

Hearing about the incident, Motalib's relatives rushed to the spot, rescued him and took him to Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead. 

Deceased's son Fujal Mia filed a case with Nasirnagar Police Station against five named people, including Raju, Officer-in-Charge of the police station Mohammad Abu Zafar said.

Police detained one of the accused Arman Mia, 20, son of Mizanur Rahman of the village, the OC said, adding that Motalib's body was handed over to his family members yesterday after autopsy.
