Fair to promote flower farming

A 10-day flower exhibition highlighting the spirit of flower cultivation began yesterday with the slogan “Amar bari, amar ghar, phul chashe shamil hoi” (my house, my home, I take part in flower cultivation).

More than 100 varieties of flowers from home and aboard are displayed in 50 stalls in the exhibition.

District Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and district Nursery Owners' Association (NOA), jointly organised the exhibition at Khamarbari in the town.

Zila Parishad Chairman Md Rezaur Rahim Lal inaugurated the festival. Deputy Commissioner Md Jasim Uddin chaired the inauguration while DAE Deputy Director (DD) Bibhutibhushon Sarkar, Additional Superintendent of Police Goutam Kumar Biswas and NOA President Pabna Kamal Ahmed spoke on the occasion.

“People are learning about various flowers, including rare flowers, through the exhibition, which will promote flower cultivation,” said the DD of DAE.

“Everyone loves flowers, but most of us do not know how to cultivate flowers properly. We are trying to teach the people about flower cultivation,” the DD added.

Kamal said hobbyist flower farmers used to organise flower exhibitions in the early '90s, but it stopped many years ago. “We are trying to get back the heritage of flower cultivation and also promoting commercial cultivation,” he added.

“We cultivated flowers as a hobby, but now it has become a good business due to its emerging demand,” Kamal said.
