Ex-secy Reazul Hoque new human rights commission chief

The government today appointed former secretary Kazi Reazul Hoque as the chairman of National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh.

Farhana Syead, public relations officer of NHRC, confirmed it to The Daily Star this afternoon.

Reazul, who had served as the full time member of the NHRC till June 22, 2016 from 2010, took the charge today after Professor Mizanur Rahman completed his tenure on June 22 this year.

The government also appointed Md Nazrul Islam, a former secretary, as the new full-time member of the NHRC and five others as its honorary members.

In an impromptu reaction, Reazul told The Daily Star that his office will work with a view to making people aware of human rights and its protection.

Apart from this, the commission will work creating awareness among people of the recent trend of terrorism and militancy, he added.

The five members are : Prof Meghna Guhathakurta, a former faculty of international  relations  department of Dhaka University; Banchita Chakma, former principal of Rangamati Government College, Prof Akhter Hussain, chairman of Public Administration department of DU; Enamul Hoque Chowdhury, former press minister at Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi; Begum Nurunnahar Usmani, former senior session Judge.
