Ex-DU VC Maniruzzaman Miah passes away

Former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Maniruzzaman Miah died at a hospital in Dhaka today at the age of 81.

He breathed his last around 11:45am while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of Square Hospital, Achintya Chakrabortty, officer, marketing and business development of the hospital told The Daily Star.

Miah had been admitted to the Square Hospital with various ailments two days back, the official added.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir offered condolences for the deceased, who was a pro-BNP intellectual, our correspondent said.

Body of M Maniruzzaman Miah will be taken to his Banani residence around 10:00am tomorrow from the Square Hospital’s mortuary.

His body will be taken to Dhaka University Geography department around 12:00pm tomorrow where he was a teacher for many years, Sayrul Kabir Khan, a staff of BNP chairperson’s media wing, told The Daily Star.

His first namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Dhaka University Central Mosque after Johr prayer while second namaz-e-janaza will be held at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Asr prayer, added Sayrul.

Later, the noted educationalist will be buried at the Banani graveyard.

He served as the DU vice chancellor between 1990 and 1992. On October 31, 1992 he was made ambassador to Senegal, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.
