EU for talks on new Election Commission

European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon has said the EU-Bangladesh joint commission will discuss the formation of a new Election Commission in Bangladesh this December in Brussels.

The EU envoy came up with the remark during talks with diplomatic correspondents at a Dhaka hotel this afternoon.

The Sub-Committee on Democracy, Governance and Human Rights of the joint commission is scheduled to hold its meeting in Brussels on December 20.

The current Election Commission will expire in February next year. The government is in a process to constitute a new commission through appointment of a new chief election commissioner and a set of election commissioners.

In reply to a question, the EU ambassador and head of delegation of European Union to Bangladesh said the issue of EC reformation will certainly be in the agenda of the joint commission meeting as the Election Commission has to play a critical role in creating confidence among all keeping the next general election in mind.

Besides, the EU envoy said that an important EU parliamentary delegation will visit Bangladesh in mid-November.

In another question about post-July 1 terror attack security situation, he said the situation has “improved greatly; but the security does not mean only the security of diplomats of diplomatic zone. The authorities must have to consider the security of the whole country.”

Mayaudon said the visit of the Chinese President and England Cricket team proves that security situation in Bangladesh has improved.

Presided over the Diplomatic Correspondent Association Bangladesh (DCAB) President Angur Nahar Monti, the programme was also addressed by DCAB General Secretary Pantha Rahman.
