Elderly woman beaten dead

A woman, who was beaten allegedly by one of her relatives over a piece of disputed land in Habiganj's Bahubal upazila on Monday night, died on way to a hospital in Sylhet yesterday.

The 55-five-year-old victim, Chan Bibi, was wife of Jahur Ali, 70, of Tarapasha village in the upazila.

Jahur, who was also injured in the attack, is now undergoing treatment at Habiganj Sadar Hospital.

Quoting villagers, police said there had been a longstanding feud between Johur and a distant relative Jinnat Ali of the village over the ownership of a disputed land.

Following an altercation around 11:00pm on Monday, supporters of the two rival families attacked each other.

At one stage, Jinnat and his men mercilessly beat up Jahur and his wife Chan Bibi, leaving them severely injured.

Local people rescued the couple and admitted them to Habiganj Sadar Hospital the same night, from where Chan Bibi was referred to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital yesterday morning, as her condition deteriorated.

She died on way to the hospital around 12:00noon.

“Police are investigating the incident,” Officer-in-Charge of Bahubal Sadar Model Police Station Masuk Ali said, adding that additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further clash.
