Criticising the Election Commission for showing “discrimination” to women councillors in allocating electoral symbols, National Human Rights Commission Chairman Mizanur Rahman today said the commission’s attitude is actually the reflection of the society, where discrimination is deeply rooted.

He termed the designation of discriminatory symbols to the women councillors in the upcoming municipality elections as “ridiculous”.

The NHRC Chairman was addressing a ceremony organised for awarding 10 lawyers who worked and gave legal aids to sexual minorities and Hijra under the fellowship programme.

Bandhu Social Welfare Society arranged the award giving ceremony at the Daily Star Centre.

The Election Commission designated different “sexiest” symbol like gas stove, bangles, frocks and dolls as election symbols for reserved women candidates in the upcoming municipal election.
