Drug baron Amin Huda denied bail

Businessman Amin Huda, who was sentenced to 79 years' imprisonment in connection with the biggest haul of Yaba tablets, failed to get bail from the High Court today.

The HC bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo dropped two bail petitions of Amin Huda, known as one of the top drug barons in Bangladesh, from its cause list after Attorney General Mahbubey Alam opposed the bail prayers in the cases.

The attorney general told The Daily Star that Amin Huda cannot get released from jail following the HC order.

Amin Huda’s lawyer Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder told this correspondent that he will move two appeals for his client’s bail before the HC after its reopening following its ongoing vacation.

The HC will reopen on May 7.

On October 25, 2007, Rapid Action Battalion seized 130,000 Yaba tablets and 5,000 Yaba alternative drugs from the possession of Amin and his partner Ahsanul Haque Hasan at their Gulshan office in Dhaka.

They also seized 818 SIM cards, one sex stimulating tablet, 139 bottles of foreign liquor, three pieces of IPS, one local area network switch, 15 cell phones, a pair of handcuffs, six computer CPUs, one laptop, one gear switch, two channel boxes, three PC monitors, 2.5 litres of orthophosphoric acid, one bottle of dietheylethol and 10 tolas of gold.

On July 15, 2012, the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka sentenced 79 years of rigorous imprisonment to Amin Huda and his partner Ahsanul Haque Hasan in two cases filed with Gulshan Police Station following the seizure.

On February 11, 2013, the HC granted bail to the businessman for six months on health ground.

On May 5, the same year (2013), following two government petitions, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court cancelled Amin Huda's HC bail and directed him to surrender before the trial court.

On June 2, 2013, a Dhaka court sent Amin Huda to jail rejecting his bail petition after his surrender.
