Rail communication on Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet routes was temporarily halted following an assault on a loco master of Sylhet-bound Jayantika Express at Brahmanbaria Railway Station this afternoon.

Some unruly drug addicts mercilessly beat up Assistant Loco Master Alim Hossain, 35, around 2:30pm, leaving him seriously injured, our local correspondent reports quoting Shakir Ahmed, assistant station master of Brahmanbaria Railway Station.

The injured has been given treatment at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, he said.

The incident took place when some drug-addict youths attempted to board the engine room while the train was stationed there, the railway official said.

At one stage, they beat up Alim when he tried to prevent them from boarding the engine room and fled the scene. As the news of the assault on the loco master spread, his colleagues stopped plying of trains, halting rail service on the routes, Shakir Ahmed added.

Sylhet-bound Jayantika Express and Chittagong-bound Nasirabad Express were stranded at the station till filing of this report at 5:20pm.
