DU white panel teachers to boycott tomorrow’s VC panel polls

Dhaka University’s white panel teachers will boycott the special senate session for electing a three-member panel to appoint its new vice-chancellor scheduled for tomorrow.

Prof Akhter Hossain Khan, convener of the pro-BNP-Jamaat backed white panel, made the announcement in a press conference at the DU Teachers’ Club this morning, reports our DU correspondent.

“We cannot take part in the special session of the senate on ethical ground as around 50 posts out of 105-member senate body remain vacant,” Khan said.

The DU VC Panel election is going to be held keeping almost half percent of post in the senate body vacant, he added.  “It is totally an unexpected matter.”

Following a writ petition, High Court on July 24, stayed the process for holding the meeting and ordered concerned authorities of the government and DU to take steps for constituting a full-fledged senate body under Section 20(1) of Dhaka University Order 1973.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court however, cleared the way for holding the special general meeting of the senate.

DU Senate comprises of the vice chancellor, two pro-vice chancellors (administration and education), five parliament members nominated by the Speaker, five academicians nominated by the President, University Grants’ Commission chairman, five principals from affiliated colleges, 10 teachers from the affiliated colleges nominated by academic council, five representatives from research organisations nominated by senate, 35 elected teachers, 25 graduate members and five elected students' representatives.
