UK, Russia, Denmark, Switzerland condemn
Condemnations of the Gulshan cafe attack that led to the death of 20 hostages, mostly foreigners, have drawn condemnation from UK, Russia, Denmark and Switzerland.
The British High Commission in Dhaka has termed Gulshan cafe attack as a “senseless act of terror”. A press release was released in this regard from on behalf of UK High Commissioner Alison Blake, acting High Commissioner Mark Clayton and the mission staff.
“As a close friend of Bangladesh and fellow members of the Commonwealth, the UK cares deeply about what happens here and stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Bangladesh in the global fight against the evils of terrorism and extremism.”
“We should do all that we can to strengthen our resolve to proclaim Islam as a religion of peace and to reject those who seek to justify violence in its name,” it said.
ATTACK INHUMANE: RUSSIA
“We are indignant at this yet another inhumane terrorist attack, which has no justification,” the embassy of Russian Federation in Dhaka said in a statement today.
“What happened in Dhaka once again proves that it is necessary to immediately combine efforts of all the global community to fight international terrorism,” it said.
DENMARK URGES UNITY
Such meaningless violence is completely unacceptable and must be fought. Our strongest response is to stay united and not let our democracy, liberty and way of live fall into fear and despair,” said Kristian Jensen, Danish minister for foreign affairs, in a statement.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy in Dhaka are in close contact with the Bangladeshi authorities and we monitor the situation closely. It is reported from official side that there are no Danes among the killed and wounded.”
CANADA STANDS WITH BANGLADESH
A statement from Benoît-Pierre Laramée, high commissioner of Canada in Dhaka, released a statement today saying “Canada stands with Bangladesh in face of this act of terror.”
“Terrorism is a global challenge which must be tackled collectively. We appreciate the commitment of the Government of Bangladesh to countering violent extremism, and Canada stands ready to support Bangladesh in these efforts,” the statement read
SWITZERLAND
The Ambassador of Switzerland to Dhaka Christian Fotsch condemned the Gulshan attack in a statement released today.
“The people of Bangladesh are admired for their hospitality extended to foreigners and for preserving their tolerant and secular heritage – values which Switzerland shares very much.”
“Appropriate measures are to be taken to prevent the spread of violent extremism and to bring the perpetrators of the attacks to justice,” the statement read.
