A teenage girl died during illegal stone extraction operation in Sylhet’s Jaaflong this morning.

The incident happening less than a week after death of six people in the district’s India-bordering Bangla Tila also injured three others, our local correspondent reports.

The deceased was identified as Shompa Das, 17, hailing from Netrokona. Those injured were primarily identified as Jyoti Bikash, Dipto Sarkar and Ajit Sarkar.

Witnesses said, workers had dug up holes near Kali Mandir of Mandir Jum area in Gowainghat upazila and digging out stones when the quarry collapsed and crushed Shompa.

Hillol Roy, officer-in-charge of Gowainghat Police Station, said the dead body was sent to MAG Osmani Medical College for autopsy and the injured admitted for treatment there.

Previously, on November 7 last week, six people, mostly child workers, were buried in an illegal stone quarry, raising serious concerns about the relentless illicit digging of stones.
