JU student’s death sparks protest, 4 hurt in police action

At least four people were injured in police action on the students of Jahangirnagar University who blocked Dhaka-Aricha highway today protesting death of their two fellows in a road accident.

Meanwhile, four more students were also injured as Bangladesh Chhatra League men attacked them during the agitation, reports our JU correspondent.

Hundreds of students of the university have been demonstrating since yesterday to press home their three-point demand including compensation for the victims’ families.

As a part of their today’s protest, the agitating students took to Dhaka-Aricha highway, disrupting the traffic movement there for around six hours from 11:30am.

Later, police charged batons, lobbed several teargas canisters and fired rubber bullets to disperse them around 5:40 pm, leaving at least four students injured, reports our JU correspondent from the spot. The injured were admitted to a local hospital.

Meanwhile, a group of BCL activists led by its JU unit library and publication affairs secretary Niladri Shekhor attacked the agitating students, leaving four of them injured, witnesses said.

The injured students include Sajidul Islam of public health and informatics, Abu Sayem of archeology and Remon of Botany.

Nazmul Hasan Rana, 24, of marketing department and Arafat, 24, of microbiology department were killed as a bus hit a human hauler on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar around 5:00am yesterday.
