DB man jailed for torturing wife

A Jessore court on Monday sentenced a police official to one year's imprisonment for torturing his wife for dowry.

The convict is Fazlul Karim, 31, assistant sub-inspector of Detective Branch of police in Dhaka. He hails from Sherpur upazila in Bogra.

He was tried in absentia. 

Judge M Shahinur Islam of Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court-1 also fined him Tk 1,000. In default, he is to suffer another seven days in jail.

According to the prosecution, Fazlul married Shahina Begum, daughter of Abdur Rahman Mollick at Ayapur village in Bagharpara upzaila of Jessore in 2005.

Fazlul had been demanding Tk 5 lakh from his in-laws since their marriage. He often tortured Shahina for the dowry money.

In 2008, Shahina filed a case with the Judicial Magistrate's Court in Jessore, accusing her husband.

After examining witnesses and the evidence, the judge found Fazlul guilty and pronounced the verdict.
