With the approach of winter in the district, a northern border region nearest to the Himalayas, the sufferings of char and poor people have increased, especially during the night and early morning, as most of them do not have warm clothes.

As they cannot afford to buy warm clothes, they have to wait for help from the government or non- governmental organisations (NGOs).

Sahera Begum, 35, a day labourer of Shahitari village in Lalmonirhat Sadar, said she and her two children suffer during the night and morning due to the cold.

Aftab Uddin, 52, also a day labourer at Kalmati char village, said he is the only earner of his five-member family. He said he earns around Tk 150 a day that he spends to manage the family, and he does not have any money to buy warm clothes.

Badiar Rahman, 67, of Char Bowalmari village, said he maintains his family through begging, but he cannot go out in the morning due to cold wave during the last few days.

Rajpur Union Parishad Chairman Mofazzal Hossain said many people from char areas in his union gather at his home and office for warm clothes every day.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Idris Ali said he will send a letter to the ministry concerned seeking allocation for warm clothes as soon as possible.
