Fugitive death row convict killed in Joypurhat ‘gunfight’

A fugitive death row convict in a murder case was killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion in Joypurhat Sadar upazila early today.

Deceased Shafin, 28, accused in 12 cases including six murders, was sentenced to death in a murder case, our Dinajpur correspondent reports quoting Maj Hasan Arafat, commanding officer of Rab-5, Joypurhat Camp.

Tipped off, Rab members launched a drive near to a refueling station in Dadra-Jointi village where the miscreants were planning to carry out subversive activities, the Rab official said.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Shafin and his cohorts opened fire targeting Rab personnel who retaliated with gunfire triggering a “gunfight”.

At one stage, Shafin, son of Nazrul Islam hailing from Natunhat Dewanpara area in the district town, was caught in the line of fire leaving him dead on the spot, the official added.

Three bullets and a foreign made pistol were recovered from the spot.
