Couple hacked to death in Chandpur

A man hacked his parents-in-law to death and injured his wife in Chandpur Sadar upazila early today.

The suspect Sumon Sheikh is absconding. His wife, Sharmin Akter, 22, survived with grave injuries.

The dead are Iqbal Hossain, 45, and his wife Mamtaj Begum, 40. The motive behind the murder could not be known immediately, our Chandpur Correspondent reports quoting police.

Zakir Hossain, local Union Parishad Chairman said Sumon hacked the trio at his paternal house at Kamranga village and fled the scene.

Md Abdul Kaiyum, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Police Station, said police recovered the bodies and sent those to Sadar general hospital for autopsies.

He said they yet to confirm the reason behind the death. Wife Sharmin Akter is currently attending treatments at Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex.

In the latest development, hundreds of villagers gave a mass beating to suspect Sumon Sheikh, who was hiding in a paddy field for all day long, around 6:00pm that left him dead on the spot, said Rampur UP Chairman Zakir Hossain Mojumder.

Anisul Haque, officer-in-charge of Chandpur Model Police Station, confirmed the incident, adding that they were on their way to recover the body.

RETIRED ARMY MAN STABBED DEAD IN PATUAKHALI

Unidentified miscreants stabbed a retired army personnel in Dumki upazila of Patuakhali early today.

Deceased Jamal Hossain Sikder, 50, of Kartik Pasa village was a retired Sipahi, our local correspondent reports quoting Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dumki Police Station.

Unidentified people called him out of his grocery shop in front of his residence past yesterday midnight and stabbed him to death near his house, the OC said.

Sikder’s family members claimed that he was killed over land dispute.

The OC further added that police are investing the incident. The body was sent to Patuakhali General Hospital for autopsy.
