7 cops closed over death of 3 in Tangail firing

Seven policemen involved in opening fire on locals in Tangail, who were protesting assault of a woman and her son Friday, have been closed to Dhaka Range, a top official said.

“We have already closed seven of the policemen who were involved in yesterday’s firing incident. Rest of them will also be closed for the sake of a fair investigation,” Deputy Inspector General (Dhaka Range) SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman today told The Daily Star.

“The seven policemen include three sub-inspectors and four constables,” he added.

Earlier yesterday, two probe bodies were formed to investigate the incident – one under the police and the other under the district administration.

At least three people were shot dead in Kalihati last afternoon as police opened fire during a clash with locals.

The incident left at least 32 others injured, including three cops and three bullet-hit locals.

Of the dead, Faruk, 20, breathed his last at Kalihati Upazila Health Complex and Kabir, 18, on his way to Tangail Medical College Hospital. Shyamol Chandra Paul, 38, died while being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
