A Dhaka court today discharged Comilla City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Monirul Hoque Shakoo from the charges of a corruption case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission in 2008.

Judge Shamim Ahemed of the Special Judge’s Court-8 of Dhaka passed the order on the ground that the charges brought against him (Shakoo) were not proved, Advocate Masud Ahmed Talukder, the lawyer for Shakoo, told The Daily Star.

On Jan 7, 2008, the ACC filed the case against the CCC mayor and his wife with Ramna Police Station on charge of their involvement in amassing Tk 4.57 crore through illegal means and concealing information about wealth worth over Tk 1.12 crore from the commission.

Earlier in April this year, Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla of the Senior Special Judge's Court accepted charges brought against Shakoo in this case.

The same day, the court, however, dismissed the charges against Shakoo's wife.

On November 13 this year, the High Court rejected a petition filed by Shakoo seeking its directive to transfer the case to a Comilla court from the Special Judge's Court-8 of Dhaka.
