Officials recovered a civet, locally called gandha gokul, from Khayertala village under Kaliganj upazila of the district on Saturday.

"The animal often cut water pipes set up by poultry hatchery owners at Khayertala. While repairing a pipe around 6:00pm on Saturday, I caught it and put it in a cage," said Liton Hossain of the village.

On information, Kaliganj upazila nirbahi officer sent police and forest department officials who recovered it.

After treatment at Kotchandpur Veterinary Hospital, it will be handed over to Khulna forest department, said Ashraful Alam Khan, a forest official in Kaliganj.

Civet generally grows 53-55 centimetres long and its tail is 48-50 centimetres. It lives on different fruits and vegetables.

The animal is now facing extinction, the forest official said.
