Charges pressed against nephew for killing 5 of a family

Police today pressed charges against the lone accused Mahfuz in the sensational five-murder case in Narayanganj.

Abul Khayer, inspector of Detective Branch of police in Narayanganj and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Shahidul Islam, 80 days into the gruesome killing.

Judicial Magistrate Sayeduzzaman Sharif recorded the statement of Mahfuz under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc).

Five members of a family were killed by unidentified miscreants at Baburail area in the city on January 5.

The deceased are Taslima Begum, 35, wife of Shafiqul Islam, a private car driver in Dhaka, their children Sumaiya, 5, and Shantu, 10, Taslima’s brother Morshedul, 22, and Lamia, 25, who was married to Shafiqul’s brother Sharif.

A day into the killing, Shafiqul Islam filed a case against unidentified miscreants with Narayanganj Sadar Police Station.

Later, police arrested Mahfuz, a nephew of the complainant of the murder case Shafiqul, and showed him arrested in the case on the same day.

The following day, a Narayanganj court placed Mahfuz on a seven-day remand in connection with the case.

In his confessional statement, Mahfuz told the court that he along with his associates killed the five members of the family.

He said he planned to take revenge on his slain aunt Lamia as she had refused his proposal for developing an illicit relationship.
