Chairman held over ‘suicide’ of Satkhira girl

​Police today arrested three people including a Union Parishad chairman in Satkhira’s Kolaroa upazila over allegedly instigating a girl to commit suicide.

The three are: Chairman Monirul Islam, local watchman Ismail Hossain, and a local Joydeb Kumar Das, our local correspondent reports quoting police.

“They were sued in a case filed by the girl’s family over death of Afroza Khatun,” said Emdadul Haque Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Kolaroa Police Station.

Last Friday, the sixteen-year-old girl was allegedly abused physically and verbally during a village arbitration, following which the teenager committed suicide.

The girl could not accept the humiliation of being assaulted by the UP chairman and chose to commit suicide, the OC said.
