Caution at ports for Bay storm ‘Kyant’

All fishing boats and vessels at the coastal areas have been advised to remain close to the coast for the depression-turned storm “Kyant” in the Bay of Bengal.

A special weather bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department said, the cyclonic storm is likely to intensify further and move in a northwesterly direction.

Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist distant cautionary signal no. 2, said Abdur Rahman, meteorologist of Dhaka Met office.

The bulletin said, the storm was centered about 595 kilometer south of Chittagong port, 510 kilometer south of Cox’s Bazar port, 645 kilometer south-southeast of Mongla port and 515 kilometer south-southeast of Payra port.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 45 kilometer of the cyclone centre is about 62 KPH rising to 88 KPH in gusts/squalls and sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre, Omar Faruq, meteorologist of BMD, told The Daily Star.
