Call for speedy trial of killers

Speakers at a rally in the town yesterday demanded speedy trial and exemplary punishment of the killers of two school children.

They also submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner and the police superintendent in this regard.

The victims are Sumaiya Khatun Meghla, 6, daughter of Milon Rana, and Mehjabin Akhtar Maliha, 5, daughter of Abdul Malek of Fatepur in Chapainawabganj municipality area. Meghla was a Class I student and Maliha a nursery student of Chhotomoni Bidya Niketon.

Addressing the rally, the speakers said neighbour Lucky Khatun, 32, called the girls to her house on February 12 and strangled them for a gold chain and two pairs of earrings. Police arrested one Geeta Rani in this connection the same day.

Police recovered the bodies from a house of rickshaw-van puller Yeasin Ali, 74, in the area on February 14. Later, Yeasin, his wife Tanzila Khatun, 55, and daughter-in-law Lucky Khatun, were held.

Lucky took Tk 5 lakh loan from different persons and did not pay the loans, the SP said, adding that she took the chain and earrings from the girls.

Lucky later sold the gold ornaments at Smriti Jewellers in the town for Tk 21 thousand, he said. The law enforcers later arrested Mohammad Palash, owner of Smriti Jewellers.

Father of deceased Maliha filed a case with Sadar Police Station.
