'Call to ensure equal share of Teesta water'

Leaders of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) in the district yesterday urged the government to take immediate steps to establish Bangladesh's right to equal share of Teesta water.

They also demanded water in all related rivers.

The speakers made the call at a protest rally in the town.

Addressing the rally, they alleged that India continued withdrawing Teesta water from up stream erecting an embankment at Gajaldoba point that resulted drying up in Bangladesh.

Due to withdrawal of huge water, the Teesta riverbed turns into a desert in the dry season and the farmers suffer for want of water in croplands, they said.

Thousands of farmers in Kurigram, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Lalmonirhat suffer for want of water as the Teesta dried up during boro crop farming, speakers said.

Ahanul Habib Sayed, convener of BSD Gaibandha, Golam Sadek Lebu, Nilufar Yasmin Shilpi, Mahbuber Rahman Khoka and Paromanada Das spoke.
