Cabinet okays easier extradition with India

Cabinet today approved a proposal making extradition easy with India.

According to clause 10/3 of the extradition treaty with India, evidence alongside the warrant of arrest was needed to extradite such persons.

The proposal was moved after India government requested to make the extradition process with Bangladesh easier.

According to the new proposal, extradition of the convicted and under-trial criminals will be possible if a court in any of the countries issues an arrest warrant against them, Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Alam told reporters at a press briefing today.    

The extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India took effect on October 23, 2016.

The cabinet secretary was briefing journalists after a following a cabinet meeting presided by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Besides, the cabinet principle approved the draft of the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute Bill, 2016 empowering the institute to conduct necessary research to increase the production of jute in the country, the cabinet secretary said.

Meanwhile, the cabinet also decided to employ nurses to senior staff posts on basis of merit if it is not possible to fill them directly through quota system, he added.

Currently there are 9,616 vacant posts for nurses in the country.

Home Minister welcomes extradition proposal

Meanwhile, talking to reporters at his office at the Secretariat, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said criminals of these countries tend to flee from one to another country when any warrant is issued.

“Now the country, where any criminal hides in, can extradite him easily,” he added, saying the amendment has been brought due to problems in extradition system.

He said: “If the amendment comes to effect, the desired person can easily be extradited.”

When asked about the extradition process of BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, the minister said he would be brought back to the country after completion of his trial there.
