Bus strike on Dhaka-Rajshahi route hits commuters hard

Movement of buses on Dhaka-Rajshahi route remained suspended since last night as Rajshahi District Motor Workers' Union enforced a strike on the route, protesting an attack on the workers of a bus by truckers.

Zillur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shah Makhdum Police Station, said there was an altercation between the workers of 'Rajanigandhya Paribahan' bus and that of a truck over loading goods on the bus roof at Naudapara Amchattar intersection around 6:00pm.

At one stage, the truckers beat up the bus workers over it and halted the plying of buses on the route.

As the news about spread around, the District Motor Workers' Union suspended bus movement from Shiroil Bus Terminal around 9 pm, causing sufferings to passengers.

Mohammad Gazi, joint general secretary of District Motor Workers’ Union, said a meeting was held with the bus and truck union leaders at Naudapara bus stand at night but it ended inconclusively.
