Brutal cold wave lifts

The brutal spell of severe cold wave that plunged Bangladesh into its lowest ever temperature has lifted.

However, a mild to moderate level cold wave is prevailing across the country which might continue, says the forecast given by Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

“The spell of severe cold wave is over,” Met Officer AbulKalam told The Daily Star. “January is the coldest month of Bangladesh. Winter is likely to make presence through the month.”

Today’s lowest temperature was recorded in Jessore at 6 degrees Celsius.

In Dhaka city, today’s minimum is expected to be 11.2 degrees Celsius, slightly colder than what it was – 12.1 degrees Celsius – last night.

Fog continues to disrupt ferries

The weather forecast says, moderate to thick fog may occur at places over the country during mid night to morning and it may continue till noon over northwestern part of the country.

For the fog, today, ferry service on the Shimulia-Kathalbari route on Padma river was suspended for nearly three hours, our Munshiganj correspondent reports.

The ferries came to complete halt from 2:30am to avoid any untoward incident, Abdus Salam, manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), said.

The services were resumed from around 5:30am, he said.Three ferries were stranded mid-river owing to the suspension.
