Briefing on power, gas tariff today; hike likely

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission will host a press briefing this afternoon regarding the tariffs of power and natural gas.

According to commission sources, the institution will discuss about fixing the power and gas tariffs as per its rules at the press briefing.

Prices of these commodities might be raised despite the fall in international oil prices, said a report published in The Daily Star today.

During 2013 and 2014, the Awami League government hiked power prices six times – the latest by a big slap of 6.96 percent in March last year.

Yesterday, utility companies called upon the commission to raise gas and power tariffs, according to officials at the power, energy and mineral resources ministry.

These issues were discussed at a meeting on the overall situation of the energy sector at the Prime Minister's Office yesterday. Senior officials of the energy and power divisions were present there.
