People today reiterated demand for speedy trial for suspended Sramik League leader Tufan Sarkar who allegedly raped a college student in the district.

Bangladesh Nari Mukti Sangsad formed a human chain at Satmatha intersection in Bogra town this morning, our staff correspondent reports from Bogra.

Meanwhile, nine people arrested in connection with the case will be produced before a local court later in the day.

Drug peddler and extortionist Tufan on July 17 abducted the female student from her home and raped her. Later, under his instruction, his party men picked up the student and her mother, tortured them, and then shaved their heads.

The victim's mother on Saturday filed two cases -- rape and torture -- against Tufan, Asha, Rumki, Rumi, Atiq, Munna, Ali Azam Dipu, Rupom, Shimul, Zitu and some unidentified persons.

All named accused but Shimul were arrested and now on remand.

Tufan was suspended from the organisation on Saturday amid a flurry of protest after the incident.
